Kingdom Citizens

Matthew 7:1-12

August 21, 2016

Few verses are as often quoted or misquoted as Matthew 7:1, “Judge not, that you be not judged.” From a quick glance, one might come away from this section in Christ’s sermon and conclude there is no place for judgment among Kingdom citizens. But is that what the text really says? On closer examination, one finds the problem is not in judgment itself.

The next section of the sermon begins with a very clear statement of purpose: “Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.” (Matt 6:1)

In these verses we now confront some of the most difficult, and perhaps most controversial, of all Christ’s teachings. We can summarize the teaching of this section in this way, “Love your enemies even and especially when they don’t deserve it.”
