Resources | Scripture Meditation

We live in a fast-paced society where there is much that is always screaming for our attention. Finding time to absorb and meditate on Scripture can sometimes seem difficult, if not impossible. The good news is that Christians have developed some beneficial resources to assist followers of Jesus in staying engaged continuously with His better story through the sacred texts. We thought it would be helpful to compile a list of resources that have assisted us in our journey of knowing God.

Summit Daily is a daily worship guide that comes through the form of a text message. The guide contains Scripture readings from the Old and New Testament, a prayer directive, and a link to songs that we will be singing corporately at the upcoming Sunday gathering. The great thing about this is that it also works as a reminder. Simply leave the text unopened until you have time to sit and read.

The Bible App is available for download on all devices and contains many different versions, including audio. This app is excellent for listening to Scripture as you are driving to work, doing chores around the house, or any other tasks that do not require much thinking. The NLT is a great version to choose if you plan on listening, and if you are just beginning to consume Scripture, you might try starting with the Message. For serious study, we typically recommend the ESV.

The Jesus Storybook Bible is one of our most common recommendations for families. It does an excellent job of pointing out how all the Scriptures find their fulfillment in the Messiah, Jesus. Though geared toward children, do not be surprised if you find yourself captivated and moved over the stories found in its pages. The truths are the same, no matter your age. There is also a Kindle version that is great to have for constant access on your devices.

The Streetlights App is geared for a younger, urban generation and is hip-hop artists reading the NLT version of Scripture over hip-hop beats. This app was created by three missional-minded men, seeking to equip young people in engaging with the Scriptures on a regular basis. Each book is set up like an album, and each chapter is set up like a song. This is an excellent tool that we highly recommend for students. Though geared toward a millennial, urban generation, it is worth checking out no matter who you are. You might find it intriguing and easy to listen to.

The Bible Project is primarily a collection of helpful overview videos about various sections of Scripture, though they have produced many other resources as well, such as podcasts, blogs, and magazines. This resource is invaluable when it comes to understanding the Scriptures as a whole, and engaging with the story of God as more than just individual, stand-alone, moral lessons. This resource is also one that is engaging for the whole family.

The ESV Bible App is a simple, streamlined app for reading and listening to the ESV. This app is great for following along with teaching on Sunday mornings, to using as a primary app for reading the Scriptures. It is designed to be distraction free and as similar to reading a physical version as possible.

Though steeper in price than many Bibles, the ESV Reader's Bible is something we highly recommend for those who enjoy reading physical books. This Bible is separated into six volumes and is formatted like a regular book. The pages are thick, the text is not pushed together, and there are no chapter or verse markings in the text. If you enjoy reading in general and would like to experience each book as it was intended, as a story with characters, meaning, and purpose, all pointing to Jesus, this is the best option out there. We could not recommend it more highly. This is a beautiful set, and they recently released a paperback version that is easier on the budget.
