Join us for The Five Solas

This Sunday we will begin a five-week sermon series entitled “The Five Solas.” We are thrilled to be digging in as a congregation as we unpack these truths and celebrate the anniversary of the Reformation! If you’ve never heard of this before, this is for you. If you are an expert on the life and strife of Martin Luther, this series is for you, too! We are really looking forward to the sparked discussions and increased gospel perspective this will facilitate with our congregation.

As our teaching team prayed and prepared for this year, it was pretty easy to arrive at the idea of doing a series centered around the Five Solas. Since October marked the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, it seemed fitting for us to spend some time here and press into the deeper meaning behind these five truths. Since the 500 years since Martin Luther published his Ninety-Five Theses against the Catholic Church and started the Protestant Reformation, a lot has changed, and a lot has stayed the same. Together, we will look at why this was a monumental moment in the history of Christianity and a launching point for gospel-centered communities and churches.

The Five Solas articulate what gospel-centered Christianity stands on. The church adopted these five statements as a constant, driving force. They are as follows:

  • Sola Scriptura – “scripture alone”
  • Sola Fide – “faith alone”
  • Sola Gratia – “grace alone”
  • Solus Christus – “Christ alone”
  • Soli Deo Gloria – “the glory of God alone”

While we don’t usually spend a great deal of time in topical teaching at Summit Crossing, we feel like this is perfect timing. Typically, we take a book of the bible and work through it, chapter by chapter. Between expository teaching and seasonal sermons (Easter, Advent, etc.), we try to build in flexibility to preach where God leads us. I deeply value this flexibility as a member of our teaching team, and I am always amazed to see how God provides clear direction and guidance. This year it just so happened we had several weeks open between Genesis and our upcoming Advent series. We believed this would be a prime opportunity to celebrate, explore, and press-in to The Five Solas. We are looking forward to how God will use this time!
